Prescott Through a Local’s Eye: Jon Arriola

Prescott Days | Showcasing the Best of Prescott, Arizona

For this installment of our Prescott Through a Local's Eye series, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jon Arriola to chat about yoga, hiking, ultra-marathons, and his favorite places to eat, drink, and be merry in Prescott. If you are someone who practices yoga or enjoys trail running in Prescott, you are likely familiar with Jon. Jon is an exceptional individual who is well-rounded and balanced in every way: a true embodiment of the healthy outdoor Prescott lifestyle.

Jon: “I have been involved in the yoga community for over 13 years now, having started practicing at the age of 19 and teaching at 21. Back in 2013, I discovered BEND Hot Yoga and started as a student. Eventually, I became an employee and instructor that same year by simply showing up, showing interest, and constantly getting in the owner's ear and asking questions. An opportunity presented itself, and through some initiative combined with my passion for yoga, I was able to create a position that affords a great work-life balance. I can't say enough good things about everyone at BEND Hot Yoga, instructors and students alike. It's definitely a family vibe.”

Jon: “As an ultra-marathoner, my training approach is simple: I just run and move as much as I can in a week. I don't have any strict mileage goals or log what I do, but rather focus on keeping moving. It seems to work well, although I always make sure to balance fun and rest, as it's crucial for success. When it comes to hiking, I have some favorite trails in and around Prescott. I am always into the Senator Highway trails, with Spruce Mountain being my go-to favorite. Unfortunately, tons of snow this year have made it a bit inaccessible at this point in the season. Another trail that I love is the #9415 Wolverton Mountain Trail, which is usually dry. Despite these great hiking spots, my dream destination hikes are in New Zealand. I admit that while the States have a ton of epic nature, New Zealand calls me in a different way, even though I have not been there yet. Bucket list item right there!”

Jon: “When it comes to places to eat, drink, and be merry in Prescott, The Century Lounge has always been a solid and enjoyable spot for me. It's not as crazy as some other joints in town, and the ambiance is just cozy and chill. Another place that I frequent multiple times a week is Lazy G Brewhouse, and The Raven Cafe is also dope. Essentially, all the places with a good outdoor patio make the list for me! I will mention though that Lazy G’s is a particular favorite of mine because their staff and employees kill it. They are all just happy and treated well, which makes for a great atmosphere. When I'm looking for a lazy day, spending time with my homies or family out in nature is always a must. Naps are also a big part of that, of course! As for pizza, Bill's Pizza is still my favorite, and I have never had a bad slice there. They have been super solid for years!”

It's been a pleasure getting to know Jon a little more and finding out his favorite local activities. For those interested in experiencing his yoga practice firsthand, Jon teaches at Bend Hot Yoga, and I encourage everyone to stop in for one of his classes. Thanks, Jon, for sharing your time and thoughts with us!
